What’s table stakes in SaaS, anno 2015
The point that I made was that most of the tactics which smart SaaS entrepreneurs developed around 2007-2009 – inbound marketing, conversion optimization, lifecycle marketing, etc. – and which gave them a competitive edge at that time can no longer be used to gain a competitive advantage. This doesn’t mean that you should ignore these strategies. It’s exactly the contrary – you have to do all of this, and you have to do it excellently. But it doesn’t mean you’ll win, it’s necessary just for having a seat at the table.
How Amazon Tricks You Into Thinking It Always Has the Lowest Prices
“Amazon may not actually be the lowest-priced seller of a particular product in any given season,” the report reads, “but its consistently low prices on the highest-viewed and best-selling items drive a perception among consumers that Amazon has the best prices overall — even better than Walmart.”
Disney’s making a kids show about a retired 15-year-old eSports player
”With the popularity of video games and electronic sports, we’re thrilled to give our audience a new series that spotlights one of their biggest passions and features fan-favorite star Cameron Boyce,” said Adam Bonnett, executive vice president of original programming for Disney Channels Worldwide. ”We are bringing the video game universe to life and giving our popular multi-camera series a fresh, new twist by integrating gaming visual effects into each episode.”
Bigger than Hollywood
”Put another way, in 2014 iOS app developers earned more than Hollywood did from box office in the US. Although the totals for Domestic (US) Box Office are not the complete Hollywood revenues picture, Apple’s App Store billings is not the complete App revenue picture either. The Apps economy includes Android and ads and service businesses and custom development. Including all revenues, apps are still likely to be bigger than Hollywood.”

The state of consumer fintech
”One thing that becomes clear is that while some companies have multiple products that target different activities involved in consumer finance, there’s no one company that does all of this. For example, there’s no tech company that allows users to both invest in stocks and bond and also take loans. Similarly, there’s no company that both gives users short term credit (credit cards) and also let them invest in the markets. Simple is an all-in-one bank, but even then that focused on the consumption side of banking, allowing for easy sending, spending and access to spending information, but it did not allow users to invest in the markets or take loans. This is how consumer banking is being “unbundled” — a bank is being broken up into its key activities, and products are emerging which do those key activities better/cheaper than banks.”
The unbundling of commercial banks
”The small business and commercial loans market is probably the one being disrupted the quickest by technology, with a number of startups emerging to compete with banks in this space, relying on different information to underwrite loans than banks have traditionally used.”
The algorithmic CEO
”The single greatest instrument of change in today’s business world, and the one that is creating major uncertainties for an ever-growing universe of companies, is the advancement of mathematical algorithms and their related sophisticated software. Never before has so much artificial mental power been available to so many—power to deconstruct and predict patterns and changes in everything from consumer behavior to the maintenance requirements and operating lifetimes of industrial machinery. In combination with other technological factors—including broadband mobility, sensors, and vastly increased data-crunching capacity—algorithms are dramatically changing both the structure of the global economy and the nature of business.”
